    In the Eastern Baltics, climatic changes are expected to alter forest composition favouring broadleaved species. The height growth of trees influences the productivity of stands and the competitiveness of species, particularly in mixed sites, thus emphasising the necessity for accurate projections. Accordingly, height models are paramount for projecting productivity and yields of stands. As tree height growth dynamics vary regionally, regional or even local models are needed. Based upon 214 National Forest Inventory plots and 510 individual canopy trees, dominant height growth for small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata Mill.) and Norway maple (Acer platanoides L.) in Latvia were analysed. Height growth was modelled using a generalised algebraic difference approach, testing several non-linear equations. The Sloboda (for lime) and Hossfeld I (for maple) models showed the best fit and were the most realistic, predicting slower initial and middle-age (maturing period) growth, yet also displayed higher asymptotes compared to Western Europe. The predicted height at the age of 80 years was 14–33 m and 13–34 m for lime and maple, accordingly. A longer establishment period and later growth culmination suggest longer rotation, highlighting the assessment of long-term risks. In this case, supplementation of the models with climatic effects appears advantageous.

    This study examines microhabitat abundance and composition on retention trees in 20 young stands in Latvia that were clear-cut between 2002 and 2004. Retention trees play a vital role in sustaining biological diversity after clear-cutting, but their mortality rate is often high due to post-harvest environmental changes. This study compares tree-related microhabitat (TreM) abundance and composition on retention trees of different dimensions, species, and vitality. The tree height and diameter were measured, and the living status and position of each tree were determined. The research questions of the study were to assess the relationships between TreMs, tree dimensions, and species, as well as to compare the occurrence of TreMs on living and dead wood. The comprehensive analysis revealed that larger tree diameters and specific tree species (Populus tremula, Fraxinus excelsior, and Salix caprea) lead to a higher abundance of TreMs. The results also highlighted the importance of preserving deadwood within forest stands as it enhances the observed abundance of TreMs. This study provides the missing information on TreMs in Latvia, thus providing data for comparison in a wider region.

    Aims: Ellenberg-type indicator values are expert-based rankings of plant species according to their ecological optima on main environmental gradients. Here we extend the indicator-value system proposed by Heinz Ellenberg and co-authors for Central Europe by incorporating other systems of Ellenberg-type indicator values (i.e., those using scales compatible with Ellenberg values) developed for other European regions. Our aim is to create a harmonized data set of Ellenberg-type indicator values applicable at the European scale.Methods: We collected European data sets of indicator values for vascular plants and selected 13 data sets that used the nine-, ten- or twelve-degree scales defined by Ellenberg for light, temperature, moisture, reaction, nutrients and salinity. We compared these values with the original Ellenberg values and used those that showed consistent trends in regression slope and coefficient of determination. We calculated the average value for each combination of species and indicator values from these data sets. Based on species' co-occurrences in European vegetation plots, we also calculated new values for species that were not assigned an indicator value.Results: We provide a new data set of Ellenberg-type indicator values for 8908 European vascular plant species (8168 for light, 7400 for temperature, 8030 for moisture, 7282 for reaction, 7193 for nutrients, and 7507 for salinity), of which 398 species have been newly assigned to at least one indicator value.Conclusions: The newly introduced indicator values are compatible with the original Ellenberg values. They can be used for large-scale studies of the European flora and vegetation or for gap-filling in regional data sets. The European indicator values and the original and taxonomically harmonized regional data sets of Ellenberg-type indicator values are available in the Supporting Information and the Zenodo repository.     Tree logging significantly impacts environmental conditions, increases soil and air temperature, and changes the microclimate and soil hydrology. This contributes to the changes in bryophyte and vascular plant cover and species composition. Site preparation positively affects the growth of planted trees in young stands but also causes forest understorey disturbance. During site preparation in young stands by spot mounding and disc trenching methods, new microtopographies, e.g. soil tumps and hollows are made in young stands. Site preparation generally increases vascular plant diversity, but there is a lack of information about the vegetation differences between microtopography depending on different site preparation methods and soil types. The aim of this study was to investigate how the microtopography formed during site preparation by spot mounding or disc trenching affects bryophyte and vascular plant communities in hemiboreal young stands two to three years after tree logging. Spot mounding altered vegetation composition more than disc trenching. Bryophyte species cover decreased in prepared soil, but Ellenberg’s moisture value increased; therefore, site preparation before planting contributes to the conservation of typical forest bryophyte species in young stands. Hollows lead to better typical forest habitat species preservation, but soil tumps diversify environmental conditions by providing new patches for the development of grassland habitat species that are not typical in this ecosystem, but temporally provide new ecosystem services.     The ability to accurately assess the impact of organic soil drainage on greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) is still limited. Methane (CH4) emissions are characterized by significant variations, and GHG emissions from nutrient-rich organic soil in the region have not been extensively studied. The aim of this study was to assess CH4 and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from nutrient-rich organic soil in hemiboreal forests to provide insights into their role in regional GHG balance. Over the course of one year, CH4 and N2O emissions, as well as their affecting factors, were monitored in 31 forest compartments in Latvia in both drained and undrained nutrient-rich organic soils. The sites were selected to include forests of different ages, dominated by silver birch (Betula pendula Roth), Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karsten), and black alder (Alnus glutinosai (L.) Gärtner), as well as clearcuts. Soil GHG emissions were estimated by collecting gas samples using the closed manual chamber method and analyzing these samples with a gas chromatograph. In addition, soil temperature and groundwater level (GW) measurements were conducted during gas sample collection. The mean annual CH4 emissions from drained and undrained soil were −4.6 ± 1.3 and 134.1 ± 134.7 kg CH4 ha−1 year−1, respectively. N2O emissions from undrained soil (4.1 ± 1.4 kg N2O ha−1 year−1) were significantly higher compared to those from drained soil (1.7 ± 0.6 kg N2O ha−1 year−1). In most of the study sites, undrained soil acted as a CH4 sink, with the soil estimated as a mean source of CH4, which was determined by one site where an emission hotspot was evident. The undrained soil acted as a CH4 sink due to the characteristics of GW level fluctuations, during which the vegetation season GW level was below 20 cm.

    This study determined the impact of subclinical intramammary infections (IMIs), such as the major and minor udder pathogens (MaPs and MiPs), on the somatic cell count (SCC) in cow milk and investigated the possibilities of indirect sensing of the udder pathogens using the mastitis detection index (MDi) (DeLaval, Tumba, Sweden). The MDi incorporates quarter-level milk electrical conductivity, blood in milk, and milking interval. The case group (n = 21; MDi ≥ 1.4) was compared with the control group (n = 24; MDi < 1.4) for the presence of IMIs. The microbiological investigation of udder quarter foremilk samples was performed two times with an interval of 10 to 14 days. The case and control groups differed in terms of the occurrence of MaPs and MiPs in milk. During the continuous subclinical IMI and the episodic MaP infection, a higher SCC was detected compared with the episodic MiP infection or quarters without IMI. The novel finding of this study was that by using the milk quality sensor for the sensing of subclinical IMIs, there was an indication for the successful detection of episodic MaPs. However, the sensing of the continuous subclinical IMIs was not possible in the current study and still needs to be investigated.

    Aircraft maintenance is considered as one of the major expenditures of aircraft operating costs. Notwithstanding that the new aircrafts, engines, and aircraft hard time parts became more durable and maintainable, the maintenance cost is still too high as against other costs like fuel and operational crews. Moreover, aircraft maintenance should be carried out with a high level of safety and security standards. All aircraft maintenance operations are subject to regulations by regulatory authorities. Such authorities can be attributed to European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Civil Aviation Authorities (NAA). The last two decades have become a turning point in the transition from the paper form of the introduction of accounting for aircraft maintenance technical operations into electronic systems, despite all the difficulties associated with these procedures. Such difficulties are not limited to regulatory authorities, personnel training and investment which is case-sensitive for small companies. Similar to all other sectors of logistics and transportation, digitalization can be one of the key engines of change in aviation, especially in the aviation maintenance; thus, the study of digitalization effects on aircraft maintenance processes at present is an important factor for improving the maintenance processes and reducing the cost of aircraft maintenance. The objective of this research is to define the ability of aircraft maintenance and repair organizations to transform their processes. To that end, a data collection method in the form of a survey was implemented within Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul Organizations (MRO) and among aircraft maintenance engineers. The survey results demonstrate that the aircraft maintenance industry is not yet fully prepared for moving into digitalization in aircraft maintenance processes. However, at the same time, the study indicates the readiness of the personnel involved in the industry to improve themselves and their skills. The industry should invest in the improvement of safety and quality of tasks subject to digitalization by means of development of reliable software/hardware, and provide suitable training for safety and quality personnel.

    This paper introduces the KABADA (Knowledge Alliance of Business Idea Assessment: Digital Approach) tool, together with the opinions of young people about entrepreneurship, their skills, and their experience with this tool. The focus is on non-business students who study natural sciences, engineering, and other areas at the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology at Mendel University in Brno, Czech Republic. The KABADA tool has been developed and tested by a team of international experts. It can be used by a wide audience, including forester management specialists. This structured, web-based platform is based on theoretical research, relevant statistics, and artificial intelligence insights. It guides entrepreneurs through business idea assessment including challenges and opportunities. The research included survey answers from 60 university students before and after using the KABADA tool. The results show that students are interested in entrepreneurship but do not have the knowledge or experience, or support from the curriculum. The majority of the students had no or very low experience with entrepreneurship, no entrepreneurship training, and had not studied entrepreneurship. After using the tool, students declared that they had a higher knowledge of entrepreneurship and the number of students who intended to become an entrepreneur increased. Eiropas Padomes IETEIKUMĀ par pamatkompetencēm mūžizglītībā digitālā kompetence ir iekļauta kā ceturtā pamatkompetence. Maģistra pētījuma mērķis ir analizēt sociālā darba speciālistu digitālo tehnoloģiju pratību sociālo pakalpojumu nodrošināšanā. Maģistra darbs sastāv no teorētiskās un pētnieciskās daļas. Teorētiskajā daļā, balsoties uz literatūras un dokumentu analīzi, tiek apskatīts digitālais kapitāls no sociālā kapitāla teoriju perspektīvām, raksturots jēdziens - digitālās transformācija digitālais kapitāls, digitāla kompetence. Empīriskajā daļā tiek izpētīts kā sociālo pakalpojumu nodrošinātāji vērtē savas digitālās spējas, un kāda ir sociālā darba speciālistu - pakalpojumu sniedzēju attieksme pret digitālo tehnoloģiju izmantošanu sociālo pakalpojumu sniegšanā. Maģistra darba pētījumā izmantota kvantitatīvā pētījuma metode. Pētījuma rezultāti parāda, ka kopumā sociālo pakalpojumu jomā strādājošiem digitālais kapitāls ir būtiski pilnveidojams, un pastāv nevienlīdzība starp tiem, kam ir lielāks digitālais kapitāls un tiem, kam tas ir pieticīgāks. Atslēgvārdi: digitālā transformācija, digitālais kapitāls, digitāla kompetence. Maģistra darba apjoms ir 60 lapaspuses, darbā ietvertas 12 tabulas13 attēli. Izmantoti 48 literatūras avoti un ietverts 1 pielikums. The relevance of the Master’s Paper theme is determined by the interaction between people and technologies nowadays. Daily life without tehcnologies is unimaginable and it is present in all spheres – private, work etc. The development of digital skills has been identified as a national priority. In the RECOMMENDATION of the Council of Europe on key competences in lifelong learning, digital competence is included as the fourth key competence. The aim of the Master’s Paper research is to analyze the digital technology literacy of social work specialists in the provision of social services. The Master’s Paper consists of theoretical and research part. In the theoretical part digital capital from the perspectives of social theories based on the analysis of literature and documents is viewed, the concept of digital transformation, digital capital and digital competence is characterized. In the empirical part the evaluation of the digital abilities of social service providers – social work specialists is studied, and their attitude towards the use of digital technologies in the provision of social services is examined. Quantitative research method is used in case study of the Master’s Paper thesis. The results of the case study show that the digital capital of social service providers can be significantly improved, and that there is imparity in this field. Key words: digital transformation, digital capital, digital competence. The Master’s Paper consists of 60 pages, 12 tables13 images. 48 literaure resources are used and 1 appendix is included.

    More than 280 trees were uprooted in winching tests monitored by high resolution inclinometers at the base of the trees and a forcemeter mounted in the winching line. The dataset comprises trees growing on different urban and forest sites in Europe and North America and mainly consists of fifteen widespread tree species. For the first time, a large number of trees were measured non-destructively prior to uprooting failure, as commonly practiced by consulting arborists in static load tests. With these tests, the bending moment required to cause 0.25° root plate inclination (rotational stiffness) was determined and used to predict the strength of the root system from equations described in two evaluation methods currently used in arboriculture. The predictions were tested against the measured anchorage strength, i.e., the maximum bending moment that was required to uproot the trees. Both methods delivered good estimates, which indicates that rotational stiffness at 0.25° inclination of the stem base is a suitable proxy for anchorage strength. Both equations can be considered valid for assessing the likelihood of uprooting failure, as they systematically underestimate and rarely overestimate the actual resistance to failure of a tree’s root system. As a trend, the differences between predicted and measured anchorage strength were larger for small trees, for which the resistance of the root system was overcome at larger inclination angles. While the quality of the predictions differed for species, it did not differ between sites. The angles of stem inclination at which the anchorage strength was overcome for all trees in our dataset support models for the mechanics involved in uprooting failure that previously have been described only for conifers with a shallow root system.

    In the Eastern Baltics, climatic changes are expected to alter forest composition favouring broadleaved species. The height growth of trees influences the productivity of stands and the competitiveness of species, particularly in mixed sites, thus emphasising the necessity for accurate projections. Accordingly, height models are paramount for projecting productivity and yields of stands. As tree height growth dynamics vary regionally, regional or even local models are needed. Based upon 214 National Forest Inventory plots and 510 individual canopy trees, dominant height growth for small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata Mill.) and Norway maple (Acer platanoides L.) in Latvia were analysed. Height growth was modelled using a generalised algebraic difference approach, testing several non-linear equations. The Sloboda (for lime) and Hossfeld I (for maple) models showed the best fit and were the most realistic, predicting slower initial and middle-age (maturing period) growth, yet also displayed higher asymptotes compared to Western Europe. The predicted height at the age of 80 years was 14–33 m and 13–34 m for lime and maple, accordingly. A longer establishment period and later growth culmination suggest longer rotation, highlighting the assessment of long-term risks. In this case, supplementation of the models with climatic effects appears advantageous.

    This study examines microhabitat abundance and composition on retention trees in 20 young stands in Latvia that were clear-cut between 2002 and 2004. Retention trees play a vital role in sustaining biological diversity after clear-cutting, but their mortality rate is often high due to post-harvest environmental changes. This study compares tree-related microhabitat (TreM) abundance and composition on retention trees of different dimensions, species, and vitality. The tree height and diameter were measured, and the living status and position of each tree were determined. The research questions of the study were to assess the relationships between TreMs, tree dimensions, and species, as well as to compare the occurrence of TreMs on living and dead wood. The comprehensive analysis revealed that larger tree diameters and specific tree species (Populus tremula, Fraxinus excelsior, and Salix caprea) lead to a higher abundance of TreMs. The results also highlighted the importance of preserving deadwood within forest stands as it enhances the observed abundance of TreMs. This study provides the missing information on TreMs in Latvia, thus providing data for comparison in a wider region.

    Aims: Ellenberg-type indicator values are expert-based rankings of plant species according to their ecological optima on main environmental gradients. Here we extend the indicator-value system proposed by Heinz Ellenberg and co-authors for Central Europe by incorporating other systems of Ellenberg-type indicator values (i.e., those using scales compatible with Ellenberg values) developed for other European regions. Our aim is to create a harmonized data set of Ellenberg-type indicator values applicable at the European scale.Methods: We collected European data sets of indicator values for vascular plants and selected 13 data sets that used the nine-, ten- or twelve-degree scales defined by Ellenberg for light, temperature, moisture, reaction, nutrients and salinity. We compared these values with the original Ellenberg values and used those that showed consistent trends in regression slope and coefficient of determination. We calculated the average value for each combination of species and indicator values from these data sets. Based on species' co-occurrences in European vegetation plots, we also calculated new values for species that were not assigned an indicator value.Results: We provide a new data set of Ellenberg-type indicator values for 8908 European vascular plant species (8168 for light, 7400 for temperature, 8030 for moisture, 7282 for reaction, 7193 for nutrients, and 7507 for salinity), of which 398 species have been newly assigned to at least one indicator value.Conclusions: The newly introduced indicator values are compatible with the original Ellenberg values. They can be used for large-scale studies of the European flora and vegetation or for gap-filling in regional data sets. The European indicator values and the original and taxonomically harmonized regional data sets of Ellenberg-type indicator values are available in the Supporting Information and the Zenodo repository.
