    Detailed data on land use and land cover constitute important information for Earth system models, environmental monitoring and ecosystem services research. Global land cover products are evolving rapidly; however, there is still a lack of information particularly for heterogeneous agricultural landscapes. We censused land use and land cover field by field in the agricultural mosaic catchment Haean in South Korea. We recorded the land cover types with additional information on agricultural practice. In this paper we introduce the data, their collection and the post-processing protocol. Furthermore, because it is important to quantitatively evaluate available land use and land cover products, we compared our data with the MODIS Land Cover Type product (MCD12Q1). During the studied period, a large portion of dry fields was converted to perennial crops. Compared to our data, the forested area was underrepresented and the agricultural area overrepresented in MCD12Q1. In addition, linear landscape elements such as waterbodies were missing in the MODIS product due to its coarse spatial resolution. The data presented here can be useful for earth science and ecosystem services research. The data are available at the public repository Pangaea (doi:110.1594/PANGAEA.823677).

The characterisation of soil surface roughness is a key requirement for the correct analysis of radar backscattering behaviour. It is noteworthy that an increase in the number of surface roughness parameters in a model also increases the difficulty with which data can be inverted for the purposes of estimating soil parameters. In this paper, a new description of soil surface roughness is proposed for microwave applications. This is based on an original roughness parameter, Zg, which combines the three most commonly used soil parameters: root mean surface height, correlation length, and correlation function shape, into just one parameter. Numerical modelling, based on the moment method and integral equations, is used to evaluate the relevance of this approach. It is applied over a broad dataset of numerically generated surfaces characterised by a large range of surface roughness parameters. A strong correlation is observed between this new parameter and the radar backscattering simulations, for the HH and VV polarizations in the C and X bands. It is proposed to validate this approach using data acquired in the C and X bands, at several agricultural sites in France. It was found that the parameter Zg has a high potential for the analysis of surface roughness using radar measurements. An empirical model is proposed for the simulation of backscattered radar signals over bare soil.

    Le projet PSDR Auvergne NewDEAL démarré en octobre 2015, ambitionne d’analyser la diversité des systèmes d’élevage à différents niveaux d’organisation (méso et micro régions, exploitation, sous-système d’exploitation, filière). A chaque niveau, il est apparu nécessaire d’identifier les éléments clefs de diversité à maintenir et articuler pour consolider l’élevage. Ce travail mobilise jusqu'en 2019 des chercheurs de l'Inra, d'Irstea et de VetAgroSup à Clermont-Ferrand, ainsi que des acteurs du développement et de l'enseignement agricole, et du développement local. Studying the structure and understanding processes acting in the Earth system at various temporal and spatial scales in order also to predict its evolution and extreme events demand an easy and interoperable access to the numerous observation data acquired on ground, in oceans, from space,... regardless their nature and mode of collection. Indeed, to study the Earth System today requires to take into account processes acting in each terrestrial component but also to understand how they interact. In the meantime, the fantastic evolution of the observation techniques results in an unprecedented increase of the rate and volume of data acquisition. This requires innovative plan easing analysis, dissemination and smart use of data and models from national and international observing systems on the entire Earth System and their access by the scientific community, public policy actors and citizens. This is why we are currently setting the Earth System data and services research infrastructure in the framework of the French national roadmap. Our project federates for the time being four data and services poles dedicated to the four physical compartments of the Earth System: Aeris for the atmosphere, Odatis for the oceans, Theia for continental surfaces and ForM@Ter for the solid Earth. Our goal is to give an easy access to data (mainly satellite and in situ) and to generate derived products (including modeling) usable by all scientific communities studying our globe as well as by public policy actors. Après plusieurs décennies d'incitation à la spécialisation des exploitations, la diversité de production au sein des exploitations est une des alternatives mise en avant pour faire face aux aléas. En élevage, cette diversité de production renforce souvent la complexité du travail et les besoins d'équipements. Or, la capacité des exploitations à s'adapter dépend fortement des coopérations développées par les agriculteurs pour réduire les intrants, valoriser les produits ou améliorer leur conduite d'exploitation. Dans ce contexte, il est important d'analyser si les coopérations inter-exploitations en zones d'élevages sont en lien avec la diversité de production intra-exploitation. Pour cela, une quarantaine d'éleveurs a été enquêtée dans la zone allaitante du Bocage Bourbonnais (Allier) où les élevages bovins spécialisés coexistent avec des mixtes bovin-ovin viande, et dans le bassin laitier de Saint-Flour (Cantal) où les élevages spécialisés bovin lait coexistent avec des systèmes mixtes bovin lait-viande. Leurs pratiques d'entraide, d'échanges de biens ont été relevées, ainsi que les différentes productions commercialisées. L'analyse montre de forts écarts d'engagement d'éleveurs, pourtant voisins, dans des coopérations inter-exploitations qui sont de formes variées mais relativement conventionnelles (CUMA et/ou hors CUMA, récoltes et/ou manipulation d'animaux). Dans l'Allier, les coopérations des systèmes mixtes sont particulièrement variées, plus fréquentes et peu orientées vers la commercialisation comparativement aux systèmes spécialisés. Dans le Cantal, les élevages laitiers -spécialisés ou mixtes lait-viande- sont les plus engagés dans les coopérations, comparés aux bovins allaitants spécialisés. Ces deux terrains montrent que les allaitants spécialisés sont moins engagés dans des coopérations localement. Ces premiers résultats indiquent que la diversité de production intra-exploitation s'accompagne de plus de coopérations entre exploitations, ce qui peut donc à terme avoir des effets positifs sur la capacité à s'adapter individuellement et collectivement. [Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [TR1_IRSTEA]ARCEAU; International audience; Assimilation of remote sensing data into crop models is generally applied pixel by pixel, while the whole image data is available. Estimating the crop model parameters of a pixel independently from the neighboring ones generates at least four issues: (1) the method does not take into account the possible spatial structures although there are not necessarily existing or easy to quantify (2) the spatial properties of images, and even more of time series of images constitute an additional source of information to use, which is neglected in this case (3) the inverse problem is generally ill-posed when applied at the pixel level and (4) repeating the same action a great number of times is not computer efficient and provides sub-optimal solutions. When inverting models of significant size, computational cost becomes a clear limitation. Some constraints are sometimes added to ensure better spatial consistency through the regularization of the behavior of a pixel by that the neighboring ones. However, this ignores the spatial dependencies of the parameters to be estimated. We propose here to exploit some spatial structures of the parameters to reduce the size of the problem and make its inversion manageable. It is applied to process concurrently a set of pixels using variational assimilation using the adjoint model. This method was applied on a simple model of plant growth, the BONSAI model, which simulates LAI (Leaf Area Index) as a function of 6 parameters. The method proposed here assumes that the parameters are governed by spatial structures depending on several levels: the cultivar, the field, and the pixel, while some of them are assumed to be stable over the whole image. For example, cultivar parameters govern phenological stages. At a lower level, some parameters depend on the field, such as agricultural practices. Other parameters depend on the pixel level, such as soil parameters. Finally, to improve the robustness of the method and reduce the space of realization, the parameters to which the model is not sensitive were considered fixed to a default value on all plots and all cultivars. The constrained variational method has been tested on twin experiments (with virtual data) and on actual observations from the ADAM experiement and evaluated on (1) the quality of the estimation of the model input parameters, (2) the quality of LAI simulation and (3) its sensitivity on the frequency of observations, i.e. satellite revisit time. If it is not always relevant to assert that space constraints allow a better reproduction of the trajectory of LAI as compared to a conventional method when a lot of observations are available, the method allows obtaining an equally satisfactory result for a much lower computational cost. However, the spatial constraints allow more stable and robust results when the frequency of observations is relaxed as compared to the assimilation by pixel. In addition, this new method requires the minimization of a single cost function easier to control when there are divergence or local minimum. Finally, estimate of the model input parameters, which is generally the main objective of data assimilation, is much less dependent on the number of observations assimilated by using these spatial constraints.

    Le changement climatique augmente l’incertitude liée aux activités agricoles car il constitue un aléa qui vient s’ajouter aux nombreux facteurs de l’environnement dont dépend l’agriculture. C’est particulièrement vrai en zone méditerranéenne. Une démarche de prospective participative a été engagée dans le Roussillon. Différents acteurs du monde agricole du Roussillon ont débattu impact du changement climatique et adaptation à ce changement au cours d’ateliers de prospective participative réalisés en petits groupes homogènes (jeunes, agriculture biologique, représentants des agriculteurs) pratiquant les principales cultures de la région (arboriculture fruitière, vigne, maraîchage). Le contexte de l’agriculture de la région et la démarche adoptée sont présentés. Il s’est avéré que les indicateurs généraux du changement climatique fournis par les scientifiques (températures et précipitations mensuelles moyennes, etc.) ne sont pas celles qui intéresseraient les agriculteurs pour adapter leurs pratiques (vitesse du vent, risque du gel, amplitude journalière et seuils de température, etc.). Mais ces modifications du climat n’effraient pas le monde agricole, confiant dans l’adaptation du matériel végétal, des calendriers et méthodes culturales. Les agriculteurs craignent beaucoup plus, à court et moyen terme, une forte régression de l’agriculture en Roussillon par l’exacerbation des concurrences internationales et par l’effacement progressif des enjeux agricoles dans les politiques environnementales et d’aménagement du territoire. Climate change increases the uncertainty associated with agricultural activities as hazard in addition to many factors of the environment affecting agricultural activities. This is particularly true in the Mediterranean area. A participatory foresight process was initiated in Roussillon (South of France). Various agricultural stakeholders from Roussillon discussed the impact of climate change and adaptation to this change in participatory foresight workshops conducted in small and homogeneousgroups (youth, organic farming, farmers representatives) practicing the main crops of the region (fruits, vine, vegetables). The context of agriculture in the region and the approach are presented before the main results of the workshops and lessons that can be learnt for the future of agriculture in this region. General indicators of climate change provided by scientists (average monthly temperatures and precipitation, etc.) are not those that would interest farmers to adapt their practices (wind speed, risk of frost and daily range temperature thresholds, etc.). But these changes do not scare the agricultural world, confident in the adaptation of plant material, calendars and farming methods. Farmers fear much in the short and medium term, a sharp decline of agriculture in Roussillon by the exacerbation of international competition and the phasing-out of agricultural issues in environmental policies and land use.

    La caractérisation de la rugosité de surface du sol est une condition essentielle pour l'analyse correcte de rétrodiffusion radar. Il est à noter qu'une augmentation du nombre des paramètres de rugosité de surface dans un modèle augmente également la difficulté avec laquelle les données peuvent être inversés aux fins de l'estimation des paramètres du sol. Dans cet article, une nouvelle description de la rugosité de surface du sol est proposé pour les applications micro-ondes. Ceci est basé sur un paramètre de rugosité originale, Zg, qui combine les trois paramètres de sol les plus couramment utilisés: root hauteur moyenne de la surface, longueur de corrélation, et la forme de la fonction de corrélation, dans un seul paramètre. La modélisation numérique, basé sur la méthode des moments et équations intégrales, est utilisé pour évaluer la pertinence de cette approche. Il est appliqué sur une large ensemble de données générées numériquement des surfaces caractérisées par une large gamme de paramètres de rugosité de surface. Une forte corrélation est observée entre ce nouveau paramètre et les simulations de rétrodiffusion radar, pour les polarisations HH et VV dans les bandes C et X. Il est proposé pour valider cette approche en utilisant les données acquises dans les bandes C et X, à plusieurs sites agricoles en France. Il a été trouvé que le paramètre Zg a un fort potentiel pour l'analyse de la rugosité de surface en utilisant les mesures radar. Un modèle empirique est proposé pour la simulation des signaux radar rétrodiffusés sur sol nu.

    Le projet PSDR Auvergne NewDEAL démarré en octobre 2015, ambitionne d’analyser la diversité des systèmes d’élevage à différents niveaux d’organisation (méso et micro régions, exploitation, sous-système d’exploitation, filière). A chaque niveau, il est apparu nécessaire d’identifier les éléments clefs de diversité à maintenir et articuler pour consolider l’élevage. Ce travail mobilise jusqu'en 2019 des chercheurs de l'Inra, d'Irstea et de VetAgroSup à Clermont-Ferrand, ainsi que des acteurs du développement et de l'enseignement agricole, et du développement local.     Studying the structure and understanding processes acting in the Earth system at various temporal and spatial scales in order also to predict its evolution and extreme events demand an easy and interoperable access to the numerous observation data acquired on ground, in oceans, from space,... regardless their nature and mode of collection. Indeed, to study the Earth System today requires to take into account processes acting in each terrestrial component but also to understand how they interact. In the meantime, the fantastic evolution of the observation techniques results in an unprecedented increase of the rate and volume of data acquisition. This requires innovative plan easing analysis, dissemination and smart use of data and models from national and international observing systems on the entire Earth System and their access by the scientific community, public policy actors and citizens. This is why we are currently setting the Earth System data and services research infrastructure in the framework of the French national roadmap. Our project federates for the time being four data and services poles dedicated to the four physical compartments of the Earth System: Aeris for the atmosphere, Odatis for the oceans, Theia for continental surfaces and ForM@Ter for the solid Earth. Our goal is to give an easy access to data (mainly satellite and in situ) and to generate derived products (including modeling) usable by all scientific communities studying our globe as well as by public policy actors.     Après plusieurs décennies d'incitation à la spécialisation des exploitations, la diversité de production au sein des exploitations est une des alternatives mise en avant pour faire face aux aléas. En élevage, cette diversité de production renforce souvent la complexité du travail et les besoins d'équipements. Or, la capacité des exploitations à s'adapter dépend fortement des coopérations développées par les agriculteurs pour réduire les intrants, valoriser les produits ou améliorer leur conduite d'exploitation. Dans ce contexte, il est important d'analyser si les coopérations inter-exploitations en zones d'élevages sont en lien avec la diversité de production intra-exploitation. Pour cela, une quarantaine d'éleveurs a été enquêtée dans la zone allaitante du Bocage Bourbonnais (Allier) où les élevages bovins spécialisés coexistent avec des mixtes bovin-ovin viande, et dans le bassin laitier de Saint-Flour (Cantal) où les élevages spécialisés bovin lait coexistent avec des systèmes mixtes bovin lait-viande. Leurs pratiques d'entraide, d'échanges de biens ont été relevées, ainsi que les différentes productions commercialisées. L'analyse montre de forts écarts d'engagement d'éleveurs, pourtant voisins, dans des coopérations inter-exploitations qui sont de formes variées mais relativement conventionnelles (CUMA et/ou hors CUMA, récoltes et/ou manipulation d'animaux). Dans l'Allier, les coopérations des systèmes mixtes sont particulièrement variées, plus fréquentes et peu orientées vers la commercialisation comparativement aux systèmes spécialisés. Dans le Cantal, les élevages laitiers -spécialisés ou mixtes lait-viande- sont les plus engagés dans les coopérations, comparés aux bovins allaitants spécialisés. Ces deux terrains montrent que les allaitants spécialisés sont moins engagés dans des coopérations localement. Ces premiers résultats indiquent que la diversité de production intra-exploitation s'accompagne de plus de coopérations entre exploitations, ce qui peut donc à terme avoir des effets positifs sur la capacité à s'adapter individuellement et collectivement.     Authors: Lauvernet, Claire; Baret, Frédéric; Le Dimet, F.X.;
